Join Me At The Gaelic College This Summer

by MichelleStewart on January 12, 2009

• Find yourself stuck in a bodhran rut?

• Use the same rhythms over and over?

• At a plateau and reached the point where you feel you have taught yourself all you can?

Well why not take a summer holiday like no other, on the beautiful island of Cape Breton at the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts & Crafts. http://www.gaeliccollege.edu

I’m honoured to again to be running the Bodhran Program at the Gaelic College this summer.  Whether you are a beginner or advanced player this course caters to all levels.  You can take bodhran as an elective or a major.

I’ll be sharing my techniques for playing with dynamic control, loads of new rhythms, changing tones, bodhran etiquette and the art of performance.   I will also show the many different playing styles and follow the bodhran through its history.  I will give you insight on how you can continue to teach yourself after the course .

Whether you are a seasoned musician hoping to fine tune your bodhran skills or have never even seen or picked up a bodhran before there is a class for you.  I keep a bunch of  “workshop” drums in Cape Breton so you don’t even have  to own a drum to take the course.  You can use one of mine.  I can then give you advice about purchasing drums and you will have a better idea of what you’re looking for after trying different makes.

This is a high energy class that will leave a permanent smile on your face.    Learning should be fun, right?

Hi Michelle,

I really like your videos and have found them really helpful in getting me started. Unfortunately, great as the Gaelic College sounds, getting to Canada is a bit out of the question for me. However, I was wondering if you do any workshops in the UK? I understand you live in Scotland, do you do any kind of Bodhran schools up there?

Hi,

Are there any bodhran summer schools next summer 2010?

Hello Michelle

My partner and I ordered bodhrans and found your videos through youtube to get started. They inspire me to learn more! I never expected this instrument to have so many tones, sounds and variations. Your instruction is very detailed and answers my many questions about the instrument. I would love to meet you in person and take a summer class with you. I’m on the other end of Canada on Vancouver Island but I’ve always wanted to go to the Maritimes. Will you be doing bodhran classes at the Gaelic College in 2010?

Thanks for sharing these helpful videos!

I just got my drum this week and I am loving playing it. I live in the U.S.A. and won’t be traveling overseas anytime soon. Do you every come here and do any workshops. My sister plays the bagpipes and I thought it would be nice to play an instrument that could accompany her. She attends the Highland Games at Stone Mountain Park in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. every year. That is where I was introduced to the bodhran. I am really enjoying your online videos but some lessons would be very helpful. I am going to try and locate an instructor in Kentucky, which is where I live. If you every make it to the U.S.A., I would like to come and watch you perform/instruct.

Thanks, Susan

Michelle, Next to my wife I love you best. Thanks to you I make a little progress everyday. i purchased a korg 30a Metro and it helps me to see where I should be. It is fantastic therapy for me to practice my BODHRAN I’m a happy little camper just to hear her sound.I’m in Nebraska so Nova Scotia is a wee bit out for me, but I love my bodhranexpert web page, us older men don’t do twitter and facebook.
